Weight Management for Pets

By achieving a healthy weight, your cat or dog will be less likely to develop underlying issues.

Life slows down for your loyal companion when they are overweight. They struggle to keep up with a healthy lifestyle; some pets have joint pain, develop organ failure and have a shorter lifespan. Trying to get your pet to a healthy weight without a veterinarian’s expertise can cause even more problems for your pet. Our hospital offers weight management consultations to give you the right tools to get your loyal companion to a healthy weight.

What happens during weight management consultations?

Weight management sessions allow our veterinarians to work with pet parents to create suitable plans for their loyal companions to gain or lose weight. During the consultation we discuss their eating schedule, check their weight and decide on a weight goal. We introduce new exercises and meal plans to get your furry friend to their ideal weight. In some instances, we may recommend special foods and nutritional supplements to ensure your pet gets all the minerals, vitamins and other nutrients they may need. We have follow-up consultations to check your pet’s progress and make adjustments as required. If your pet is struggling with its weight, reach out to us for help. Please contact us at 905-856-7387.

How can I get my pet to a healthy weight?

The first step to getting your loyal companion to a healthy weight is to seek a veterinarian’s input. A veterinarian can create a specialized diet that curbs their weight gain/loss while still giving them enough nourishment. Here are some other guidelines you should follow:

  1. Encourage your pet to be more active. Incorporating exercises into their daily routines helps your pet lose excessive weight. If your pet is older our doctors can recommend low-impact exercises like swimming.
  2. Practice portion control. Serving sizes on product labels are general guidelines and not specific to any pet. Based on your pet’s breed, size and age a veterinarian can give you tips on how much to feed your pet.
  3. Schedule their mealtimes. If you constantly leave out food for your pet they will eat everything in their bowl. By having a feeding routine your pet will eat less.
  4. Limit their unhealthy treats. Ask our veterinarians for recommendations.
