Spaying and Neutering for Pets

Surgery with the most benefits – including reducing your pet’s risk for certain health issues.

Spaying and neutering are surgeries that can help pets live longer and healthier lives. Both procedures help reduce overpopulation in animal shelters. Our veterinarians recommend that pets have the procedure performed as soon as possible before they go into heat around 5 or 6-months-old. What is spaying and neutering?

Spaying and neutering are often referred to as getting your pet “fixed”. Neutering is performed on male pets whereby the testicles are removed. Spays are for female pets, where their ovaries and uterus are removed. Both surgeries require general anesthesia. (This means that your pet will not feel any pain, as they will be asleep the whole time.) When the procedure is done, we monitor your furry friend until they wake up from anesthesia. We provide pain medication to help your pet during recovery. Our team will also schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure their incision heals properly.

Why should I have my pet spayed or neutered?

The most known benefit of spay and neuter surgery is preventing pregnancies. The procedures end the heat cycle and habits that develop when they are sexually mature. Pets that haven’t been spayed or neutered spray furniture, hump objects, and people, are more aggressive, and stray more often in search of other animals to mate with. There are also health benefits to having either procedure done as they prevent your pet from developing cancers of the reproductive organs.

Can my older pet be spayed/neutered?

Yes! There is no age limit for spays and neuters. Loyal companions as old as 10-years-old can have either surgery. As long as our team determines that your pet is healthy enough for surgery we can go ahead with the procedure.
