What changes happen to my pet when they get older?

Some signs that your pet is aging include:

  1. Thinning/greying fur
  2. Less responsive when called
  3. Moving slower
  4. Reluctance to be active
  5. Bumps and lumps on their body

What medical issues are senior pets prone to develop?

Senior pets are susceptible to the same illnesses that older humans have. As they age they get more tired and this makes it harder for them to keep up with their lifestyle. Because their bodies are slowing down and their immune system is weaker they are more likely to develop:

  • Memory loss
  • Arthritis
  • Obesity
  • Bladder and kidney issues
  • Vision and hearing problems
  • Cancer

By taking your senior pet to the vet regularly, we can catch signs of these conditions before they advance. Even if your pet has any of these illnesses they can be managed well with treatment. If your pet is showing any signs of these conditions please contact us today at 905-856-7387.

How can I support my pet through this new stage of their life?

Your pet’s best chance of warding off illness in their old age is to have regular veterinary exams. Senior pets need at least two wellness exams each year to detect unknown illnesses and to monitor pre-existing conditions. You should also consider changing their diet and exercise to something more fitting for their age. These are all discussed during your senior pet’s veterinary exam.
