Parasite Control & Prevention

Year-round parasite prevention is essential to protect your pet from internal & external parasites.

Many pet parents are familiar with common parasites like fleas and ticks. Although they can cause harm, there are other dangerous and potentially deadly critters that can affect your pet. To combat this issue our veterinarians have created parasite prevention programs that include routine testing and preventative medicine. Preventatives protect your furry friend from conditions like Rabies and Lyme disease which can be transmitted from pets to humans.

What kind of parasites does my pet need protection from?

There are many different types of parasites that may infect your pet and they are classified as either internal or external. Internal parasites include heartworm, roundworm, tapeworm, coccidia and hookworm. Internal parasites live in your furry friend’s digestive system. External parasites include fleas, ticks, ringworm, mange mites and ear mites. To get your pet on parasite prevention medication, please call 905-856-7387 to schedule an appointment.

What are signs that my pet has parasites?

Signs of parasites may look different for every pet, some general symptoms you can look for are:

  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Swollen belly
  • Itching and scratching
  • Red bumps
  • Protruding lumps

Will my pet need parasite protection if they stay indoors?

Yes! Indoor pets also need parasite protection as pests and diseases can still enter your home. Fleas and ticks can be brought inside through other hosts like pets and sometimes even humans. Even during winter, dangerous parasites can hide in corners of your home and infect your pet. Many lay eggs, hibernate, and then become active again in the spring.
